PART TWO
…HELL…
Chapter 10
The Mailman’s Tale
We’ve set up a base camp in a small town in Georgia. There came a point soon after crossing the border into the Peach State where we could no longer ignore the fact that we have no idea where we’re going. The easiest thing to do was to fortify a house and stay there until we have successfully brainstormed a way to find New Atlanta.
Bill, Jasper and I are in the kitchen studying a map we found in the former residents’ junk drawer.
“We know the CDC came up with the cure, so maybe they’re still operating from that building,” Bill suggests.
“Yeah, but that’s right in the city. Seems unlikely that they would be able to secure that area. It’s too heavily populated,” says Jasper.
“It can’t be there. It’s just a building. How would they have a runway for the airplanes?” I say.
“Damn it, you’re right,” Bill sighs. I can see him starting to get deflated. “I’m a supervisor. I should have had the coordinates and known where we were going!”
“Don’t beat yourself up, Bill. How could we know we would end up like this?” I reply.
We both look over at Jasper.
“How many times do I have to apologize?” he cries, as he takes an angry bite from an apple and walks away. He comes back immediately, however. “Hey, what about military bases?”
“That’s an idea. Are there any on here?” Bill and I both begin to pore over the large, wrinkled map.
“There’s Naval Air Station Atlanta. That’s a good candidate,” Bill says, pointing his index finger to a certain spot on the map.
“That’s an old map,” Jasper remarks. “The Navy relinquished that to the state years ago. Pre-zombie.”
“How do you know all this?” Bill asks.
“Truck drivers have a lot of mandatory down time to watch the news. And a lot of driving time to listen to the radio.”
“A newshound like you must have been all over the rise of the undead.”
He smiles proudly. “Truck drivers were one of the first groups to report the undead activity. I ignored my route, drove home and tossed Nadia into the truck. She didn’t know what the fuck was going on. But she knew that if I was scared, she had better be scared, too. She never saw me like that before. We went to the mall and locked ourselves in. Didn’t come out until we ran out of food.”
“Why the mall?” Bill asks.
“I don’t know, man.”
“That’s where they go in the movies,” I answer Bill.
“Fine, yes, that’s where they go in the movies,” Jasper admits, looking slightly embarrassed. “What did you do?”
“Oh, ya know, laid low, waited it out. I don’t really like to talk about it.”
“Waited it out? It’s not over yet! What are you talking about?”
“He said he doesn’t want to talk about it,” Maria says sternly. No one had noticed her appear in the kitchen door. “I can’t imagine a lot of us do. I’m sure everyone here has done things they’re not proud of in order to survive.
